They may be small in stature, but they are fast becoming four very big reasons that both the young - and the young at heart - are counting down the days for the first animal encounters experience at Rockhampton Zoo.

And the wait is just about over.

Rockhampton Zoo has today announced April 6 as the official start date – with tickets available for pre purchase from this afternoon.

Rockhampton Regional Councillor for Sports, Parks and Public Spaces Cherie Rutherford said she was thrilled to announce the encounters will launch during the Easter school holidays.

“Easter school holidays have just started for our schools around the Regions and what an unbelievable way to kick them off,” Cr Rutherford said.

“I am absolutely delighted that this is something visitors will be able to experience here at our amazing zoo so soon, and I can promise you it’s not going to disappoint.”

The animal encounters experience was first announced by Rockhampton Zoo earlier this week.

“To say it’s been well received by the community is almost an understatement,” Cr Rutherford said.

“There has been so much talk, so much excitement, and hundreds of likes and comments on the Zoo’s Facebook page since we put out the teaser on Monday.

“I cannot wait for Tuesday and to see the joy on people’s faces as they get to know our beautiful Aya, Sabari, Keeya and Mahlia.”

Cr Rutherford said each encounter will run for approximately 25 minutes.

“During this time you will be in the meerkat enclosure, feed them, take photos – all while learning about them from our amazing keepers,” Cr Rutherford said.

“To the keepers’ credit, the meerkats have grown even more comfortable with new people and it is very likely they will even sit right beside you or right on top of your head.

“For me, what makes this even more special is that all the while, you are also helping animal conservation – with 15 percent of all ticket sales going directly to projects that support animals in the wild.”
