The cars are coming! Summernats set to rev up Rockhampton!
Published on 10 April 2019
Tyres will burn, drag races will take over city streets and drifting champs will send it sideways at the greatest horsepower party Rockhampton has ever seen!
From 2020, the one and only Summernats will bring the noise and smoke of its most iconic events to Rockhampton for the brand new annual ROCKYNATS, with the first event being held June 26 – 28 2020
Rockhampton Region Mayor Margaret Strelow said Summernats have built a strong brand in their iconic car festival in Canberra which is now more than 30 years old.
"More recently the Summernats team have taken their successful formula to Alice Springs and proven that the event can safely cross the border and leave the national capital and deliver a very effective state scale event elsewhere. And so it is a sheer delight to announce that Rockhampton will host the Queensland version of this successful Summernats offspring for a period of a minimum of five years," Mayor Strelow said.
“We are thrilled to announce that Council is bringing the very best of Summernats to the heart of our city for three days of extreme auto action.
“The beauty of ROCKYNATS is that our event will be the one and only Summernats event in Queensland pulling an audience from right across the State.
“Many people from Rockhampton have travelled to Summernats in Canberra, but now it’s time for us to bring a bit of that excitement to our own city and create an iconic event which no other city could match.
“We already have a vibrant street machine and automotive scene in the Region, so ROCKYNATS will not only add to our diverse event portfolio but it will be one of those great destination events bringing fantastic new tourism and economic offerings.”
Street Drags, Burnout Masters, Drifting, Show and Shine, Cruising, and the Street Parade will be the main events of the 2020 festival, with other program elements still in development. The event will take over Quay Street, and the riverside on both the north and south side of Rockhampton, making it a walkable and easily accessible event for all motor enthusiasts.
With the event only 14 months away, Mayor Strelow says there is no time to lose with Council’s Advance Rockhampton team working closely with the organisers of Summernats to Australia’s favourite horsepower party to Rockhampton.
Summernats co-owner Andy Lopez says everyone is excited about the ROCKYNATS festival.
“The Summernats crew is pumped about working with the Rockhampton Regional Council team. The car scene in Central Queensland is strong and passionate, and ROCKYNATS will give this great community a new place to race, show off, and party,” Mr Lopez said.
“When you look at the program, there are plenty of reasons for entrants to bring their cars from around QLD and all over Australia to Rockhampton. At the high performance end, Street Drags are unique to ROCKYNATS and the burnout competition will be a qualifying event to the prestigious Summernats Burnout Masters.
“You’ve also got drifting by the river, a Street Parade, and a massive show and shine in the awesome Quay Street precinct, so ROCKYNATS has all the ingredients to be a long term success on the national car festival calendar alongside Summernats and Red CentreNATS.”
“According to a recent ACT Government economic impact report, the Summernats brings over $28M to the ACT economy in four days plus a further $3.5m spent on automotive products in Canberra getting ready for the show. This is concrete evidence of the significant contribution that car festivals can make to regional economies and communities.
“Much like Red CentreNATS, which has proactive and proportional support from the NT Government, ROCKYNATS has the backing of a visionary, get-it-done Rockhampton Council. We’re confident ROCKYNATS will bring direct economic impact to the region immediately and long term.
“We’ve talked with industry partners and high profile competitors about ROCKYNATS in the lead up to today’s announcement, and it’s fair to say there’s a lot of excitement out there. The cars are coming!”
ROCKYNATS, June 26-28, 2020, is proudly presented by Rockhampton Regional Council in association with Summernats.
