Rocky Council Worker named one of CQ Uni’s Best

A local council worker has received a prestigious award thanks to her achievements during a Traineeship at Rockhampton Regional Council.

Emily Haig was awarded the CQU Shelley Gregory Memorial Prize at a formal ceremony earlier this month, and told the dedication she showed to leadership and teamwork during her Certificate III in Business Administration – completed as part of her Traineeship – had led to her selection as the winner.

Ms Haig, who now works in a part time administration role with Council, said she was delighted to receive the award.

“It is such an honour to receive the CQU Shelley Gregory Memorial Prize, and I am so grateful to both Council and CQU for the opportunities they provided.

“I learned so much during my Traineeship and all of the different things I got to try helped me work out what I wanted to do in the long term.

“The support and guidance I received from my managers and colleagues at Council was absolutely invaluable. It’s so wonderful to be part of a team where we work hard and get things done for our community, but can also have fun along the way.

“I am now studying for a Bachelor of Business with Majors in Management and Marketing, which I’m not sure I would have applied for before this experience.

“I also managed to secure a permanent part time job with Council once my Traineeship had finished, so I get to keep learning all about the practical side of business alongside my degree – it’s brilliant.”

Rockhampton Regional Council CEO Evan Pardon said that Council was committed to providing excellent opportunities to those starting out in the workforce or looking for a change of career.

“Trainees and apprentices at Rockhampton Regional Council gain valuable work experience, learn new skills on the job and in the classroom, and end up with a nationally recognised qualification.

“They really are a fantastic opportunity to explore different types of work, have access to excellent mentoring, and get a thorough understanding of Council which can lead to a permanent position.

“Applications for our 2020 trainee and apprenticeships will be going out in the next couple of months, so make sure you keep an eye out for them. You can also set up a job alert on our website so that you will be notified of vacancies as soon as they are advertised.

“Depending on our business requirements there will be opportunities across a range of departments, including in Business Administration like Emily.

“I am so pleased that Emily’s hard work has been recognised by CQU and that we were able to provide a supportive environment in which she could thrive.”
