The Rockhampton Museum of Art will officially open its doors on Friday 25th February 2022.

Rockhampton Region Mayor Tony Williams said the official opening to the public marked the beginning of a new chapter in Rockhampton’s Cultural history.

“The Rockhampton Museum of Art holds one of the finest art collections in regional Australia and, for too long, most of it has had to be hidden away as we simply didn’t have the space to display it,” Mayor Williams said.

“This new building will change that and allow us to display our nationally significant collection of modern Australian paintings from artists such as Sidney Nolan, Arthur Boyd, Russell Drysdale, John Coburn and Charles Blackman.

“It will also feature contemporary artists including the likes of Michael Zavros, Del Kathryn Barton, Richard Bell, Sally Gabori and Ben Quilty as just some of the many names whose works have been acquired.

“That is why the first exhibition we will be showing when it opens will be The Welcome Home Exhibition, celebrating the rich and vibrant collection that has defined our cultural scene for 45 years.

“I look forward to seeing everyone at the opening to help us welcome home our collection,” Mayor Williams said.

Federal Member for Capricornia Michelle Landry said the Australian Government was proud to contribute $10 million in funding to the project which supported local businesses who provided goods and services throughout the construction.

“The Rockhampton Museum of Art is six times the size of the previous gallery and has the work of some of Australia’s most significant artists,” Ms Landry said.

“The Rockhampton Museum of Art consists of a lower gallery exhibition space, upper-level gallery, three education and access spaces, a retail shop, a restaurant/café and landscaping.

“The funding provided for the relocation of the Rockhampton Museum of Art to a new location which will now form part of the Cultural Precinct, connecting heritage elements such as Customs House with contemporary art and culture.”

Member for Rockhampton Barry O’Rourke said the Palaszczuk Government’s commitment of $15 million for the Rockhampton Museum of Art was a long-term investment in the local community and cultural tourism for the region.

“This beautiful new art Museum will benefit Queensland’s arts sector and broader Rockhampton community, creating ongoing cultural and economic benefits for future generations,” Mr O’Rourke said.

“The Rockhampton Museum of Art will offer many great opportunities to the region.

“Along with showcasing its own collection, the new Museum will present the work of Queensland artists, engage with audiences and schools through a program of events, and host nationally significant travelling exhibitions,” Mr O’Rourke said.

The Rockhampton Museum of Art will officially open to the public on Friday 25th February 2022. Further details around events planned for the opening weekend will be released in the coming weeks.

The Rockhampton Museum of Art is funded by the Australian Government through the Building Better Regions Fund; the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland and the Building our Regions program; and Rockhampton Regional Council.
