Springers Lagoon, Gracemere’s stunning natural waterhole, is set to be made even more enjoyable with a brand new fishing and viewing platform.

The platform is an initiative of the Queensland Government, and made possible through $80,000 in funding from Round 2 of the Works for Queensland program.

Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe praised council for plans to deliver the platform in partnership with the Palaszczuk Government.

“This fantastic new recreational facility is yet another example of how Works for Queensland is delivering for the Rockhampton region,” he said.

The new platform is in addition to work undertaken in recent years to renew Springers Lagoon thanks to $65,000 allocated through Divisional Councillor Ellen Smith’s discretionary fund and $5,000 allocated through Councillor Drew Wickerson’s discretionary fund.

Past work included stabilising and revegetating the creek bank, upgrading the carpark, and creating a waterway access point for small non-motorised water craft.

Councillor Smith said the new platform will be a great addition to the renewed Lagoon.

“Springers Lagoon is a beautiful natural area recognised for its fishing and variety of local birdlife,” said Cr Smith.

“Visitors can spot red-backed fairy wrens, black cormorants, and kingfishers, or they can try their luck at catching a sleepy cod or barramundi.

“The Lagoon is already a popular site for bird watching, fishing, and picnics, but this platform will really take it to the next level.”

The new platform will include interpretative signage funded through Council. The signage includes artwork commissioned from local artist Kelly-Dee Knight, as well as information about the local flora and fauna and the broader significance of Springers Lagoon in the Fitzroy Floodplain.

“Once this new platform is complete, I expect that Springers Lagoon will be even more loved by visitors and the community,” said Cr Smith.
