Everyone at Rockhampton Regional Council would like to wish the community a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Although 2020 has been a year like no other, it hasn’t been all bad: check out our Year in Review video on our Facebook page.

Most of our offices and services will adjust their opening hours from 3pm on Christmas Eve until Monday 4 January, but the Zoo will be open every day apart from Christmas Day and waste and recycling collections will continue as normal. The full details of opening times are below. If you need any assistance from Council over this period please call our 24 hour number – 1300 22 55 77.

Acting Mayor Neil Fisher said:

“This time last year when we were all reflecting on 2019, we had absolutely no idea what was in store for us in 2020. It’s definitely been a year that I’ll put on my anti-bucket list.

“This year has certainly not been without significant challenges, but I really want to focus on the best of 2020. Through resilience, determination and unity, Council delivered some fantastic initiatives and projects for our Region.

“Following the onset of COVID restrictions Council quickly announced a $1.3 million relief package for businesses and community groups, we maintained a robust workforce of 925 full time equivalent employees, and we worked closely with community groups to develop and roll out a COVID-19 grant program.

“Council invested $96.1 million on capital works projects throughout the 2019/20 financial year, boosting our local economy and driving job creation. We spent $10.7 million in our rural road network and thanks to our strong local preference policy we also spent $113.3 million on goods and services from local businesses within the Rockhampton Regional Council boundaries this year.

“We are seeing significant progress on the long-awaited Rockhampton Museum of Art which is on track for its 2021 completion date and were the first regional airport in the country to reveal the new state of the art body scanners and baggage screening equipment required by the Australian Government’s Strengthening Aviation Security Initiative.

“Recent upgrades to Mt Archer, the new Mt Morgan bike trail, our new meerkat additions and the announcement of another baby chimp for the zoo are set to bring even more visitors to our Region and we can begin to get excited about some major events returning in 2021.

“On behalf of all Councillors and staff I would like to wish everyone a happy, healthy and safe Christmas and New Year.”
