Lifetime Registration Tags for Region’s Dogs

Dog owners across the region can look forward to a simpler registration process from now on thanks to the introduction of life time dog tags.

Chair of Rockhampton Regional Council’s Regulatory Committee, Councillor Ellen Smith, said there would be a number of benefits from the new scheme.

“It’s vital that your dog wears its tag so they can be returned to you if they ever get lost, but we all know that removing the old registration tag from your dog’s collar and putting the new one on can be quite an ordeal.

“From this year, Council will be issuing a one off life time registration tag which won’t need to be removed and replaced annually. The lifetime tag and its number will remain with your dog for life.

“Although the tags will last forever, pet owners still need to register their dog each year and will continue to receive an annual Registration Renewal Notice.

“Remember, if your dog is desexed and microchipped registration costs just $17 a year and if you hold a Centrelink Pension Concession Card it is totally free.

“We are also now offering a 50% discount on registration fees to anyone 65 or over who has a desexed and microchipped dog.”

Cr Smith said the new tags would reduce Council’s environmental impact too.

“Since September 2018 we registered over 21,000 dogs which means 21,000 plastic tags were issued with 21,000 paper letters.

“Once everyone receives their lifetime tag, future registration confirmations can be issued by email so we will see a big reduction in the paper and plastic used.”

Registration payments are due by August 31 and notices will be issued in the next few weeks.
