Keeping Rocky Roads Safe

Rockhampton Regional Council today praised the Federal Government for investing nearly a million dollars in the city’s most recent road upgrade.
The roundabout on the corner of Denham and Campbell Streets received $936,000 from the Australian Government’s Black Spot Program, which aims to reduce the risk of crashes by focusing on locations identified as dangerous.
Federal Member for Capricornia, Michelle Landry, said she was thrilled to see the intersection reopened and was confident the upgrades would improve the function of the intersection.
“Improving our roads is a constant priority for me and I’m so pleased to see this intersection open and flowing better than ever.
“I think the addition of a roundabout has certainly improved the flow of traffic at this intersection known for its accident risk.
“This intersection will surely be better able to handle continued growth in local traffic as our local economy continues to grow and develop, and I’m looking forward to further projects under the Blackspots programme getting the green light in the future.
Chair of the Infrastructure Committee, Councillor Tony Williams, said the Council was very grateful for the Federal Government’s support.
“Keeping citizens safe should be the top priority of all levels of government, and I for one am extremely pleased that the Federal Government has invested this money in our community.
“We had seen five serious crashes at this intersection from 2009 to 2014, and we knew something needed to be done. The main type of accident was what is known as a ‘through through’ crash, and installing a roundabout significantly reduces these.
“I also want to take this opportunity to thank residents and businesses for their patience. We did the work in stages to ensure the intersection was not completely shut down, but we do know that these works can cause an inconvenience.
“However I am sure we all agree that the short term disruption is worth it if it means saving lives.
“All that’s left to do now is the beautification works. The pipes and irrigation is already in place, and the plants will be coming soon.”
