Seniors in the Rockhampton Region are being treated to a range of free and low cost activities thanks to local community groups and Rockhampton Regional Council.

Communities Chair Councillor Rose Swadling said the program of events was the broadest Council had ever pulled together.

“Seniors Week is a really important time. It’s an opportunity for people of all ages to join together and celebrate the valuable contributions of older people, which at times can be overlooked.

“Many of us across the region do celebrate these contributions all year round, but this gives us a chance to really highlight them.

“It also gives us a chance to say thank you, by providing a great program of events delivered by Council and community groups. This year we have everything from BBQs and morning teas, to concerts and sculpting workshops. There’s plenty of ways to stay healthy too with aqua aerobics, meditation and yoga. Throw in day trips, a morning at the movies and a trivia night and there really is something for everyone.

“Best of all, lots of the events are free and the others are all low cost. I am really looking forward to getting involved and hope to see lots of our residents enjoying themselves too.”

Seniors Week aims to improve community attitudes towards older people and ageing; facilitate community participation and activity by older people, including those from Indigenous and culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds; and enhance community connections and inter-generational relationships.

Queensland Seniors Week will be celebrated from 18–26 August. A full list of up to date events is available here.
