It’s time to Get Ready Rockhampton

Flooding in Rocky

It’s Get Ready Queensland Week, and Council is asking residents to take the opportunity to ensure they’re prepared for a disaster.

Chair of the Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) Councillor Tony Williams said this annual week-long State Government campaign is a great reminder for people to ensure they’re ready for the extreme weather summer may bring.

“This week people across the State are being urged to make sure they understand their risks, and have an effective plan in place,” said Cr Williams.

“Queensland is the most disaster impacted state in Australia.

“Already this year we have seen fires in our region, and, according to the Bureau of Meteorology’s recently released Severe Weather Outlook, we can expect elevated bushfire potential throughout the season.

“While there is also a lower than usual risk of cyclones and floods this season, here in Central Queensland we certainly understand the reality that storms, floods, and cyclones can strike at any time and cause significant damage.

“As we move into the weekend, I would like to urge everyone to take a few hours this Saturday or Sunday to sit down as a family, make sure you have a plan in place for whatever summer might throw at us, and familiarise yourself with Council’s Emergency Dashboard.

“Here at Council we are also taking the time to ensure we’re prepared, and working closely with emergency services and agencies in our region.

“Recently, for example, the LDMG met for a tabletop exercise simulating a heatwave event in Rockhampton to ensure that all agencies and stakeholders are prepared and ready to act in their roles.

“This is the time that everyone in our community should be taking advantage of to ensure they have a disaster plan in place.”
