Help mark Botanic Gardens Day this Sunday by heading along to our great gardens for a free guided tour and even purchasing your own propagated piece to take home.

Parks, Sport and Public Spaces Councillor Cherie Rutherford said the event, which takes place between 10am and 2pm at the Rockhampton Botanic Gardens, will be a lovely opportunity to get out and enjoy some green time.

“We are so lucky to have one of the oldest and most significant gardens in our state right here in Rockhampton,” said Cr Rutherford.

“There’s more than 150 years of history here – from the trees that put down roots not long after the Archer brothers to the different collections added by curators along the way.

“The wonderful Friends of the Gardens volunteers will be hosting free guided tours through this history on Sunday.

“And they’ll be hosting a sale at the Greenhouse of plants propagated from our gardens so you can take a piece home with you.

“This Sunday also marks an exciting new change moving forward.

“The Friends of the Gardens will be taking over the operation of our information centre here, so you will be able to come down between 10am and 2pm on Sundays, Mondays and Thursdays and benefit from the wealth of information these passionate volunteers have.”

Linda Broun, President of the Friends of the Gardens, said the group is looking forward to sharing their passion on Sunday and through the information centre moving forward.

“The Botanic Gardens is one of the most serene places I could imagine,” said Ms Broun.

“I’ve been volunteering here since 1999 and there is such a wonderful sense of satisfaction in helping to achieve something, as well as the camaraderie with other volunteers.

“We’re really looking forward to sharing our love for these gardens on Sunday and through the information centre here moving forward.

“Our group is also always looking for more volunteers, so if you’re a bit of a green thumb or just looking for a nice way to spend a few hours each week please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

“There’s so much people can do, and we’re always looking to increase our numbers.”
