Rockhampton Regional Council has reassured the community the Heritage Village has a bright future ahead as a new business plan is explored and implemented over the next 12 months.

Council last week decided to keep the facility closed to the public during that time and Communities Councillor Drew Wickerson said it would give Council time to focus on what a reimagined experience might look like.

“Council has been considering what the future of the Heritage Village might look like for a while and now is the time to get to work and see what innovative proposals can be developed,” Cr Wickerson said.

“The Friends of the Heritage Village will not only be an important part of this reimagining and development process however. Council will rely on our passionate volunteers to continue to maintain our wonderful collection of heritage buildings, grounds, invaluable historical collections and to take the very best care of our beloved animals.

“I want to take this opportunity to sincerely thank our volunteers for their dedication to the Rockhampton Heritage Village. Without question, this amazing group of people activate and breathe life into the village.

“Last year we engaged with volunteers to get some early feedback and it was a fantastic turnout with around a hundred volunteers attending to give us their thoughts.

“There are still plenty of discussions to be had yet around what the next steps for the Heritage Village are and I’m looking forward to opportunities to further connect with stakeholders and the community throughout this process.

“Now is the best possible time to do that work as efficiently as we can and I’m looking forward to updating the community on its progress as we begin to map out a new world for our old world.

“At the end of the day, everyone wants this much loved part of our community to be the best it can be not just for locals but for tourists and visitors alike.

“This process gives us the scope to make sure we’re delivering that for everyone and that’s what our community and this wonderful facility deserves,” Cr Wickerson said.
