Rockhampton Regional Council has today announced another measure to help businesses get back on track as the COVID-19 restrictions begin to ease.

The change, which will see businesses be able to use Council controlled footpaths for dining and retail displays without filling out forms or paying a fee for the next twelve months, was discussed at today’s Council meeting.

Rockhampton Region Mayor, Margaret Strelow, said Council was constantly looking for ways to help businesses during these difficult times.

“We know that many local businesses are really doing it tough at the moment, and they will be trying to reorganise their product or set up their establishment  to make sure they are COVID-19  safe,” Mayor Strelow said.

“The change we’ve announced today means that while those who want to use Council controlled footpaths for dining and retail displays will need to make sure that they have the right insurances and leave 1.5 m for pedestrian access, we have created a red tape free environment to give them a helping hand.

“In place of what can often seem an onerous application process, we are looking for businesses to use common sense and for us to work in partnership so we can make this process easier, and ensure businesses can have some extra space for their customers especially while social distancing requirements are in place.

“This can be for any businesses, not just those in the CBD. It will apply until the end of the 2020/2021 financial year, although obviously if there are issues we will review earlier.”

Mayor Strelow said this one just one of the measures Council was implementing to support local businesses.

“Six weeks ago Council announced a $1.3 million support package which included direct support for businesses such as extending existing business licences extended until 30 June 2021, and having Advance Rockhampton work shoulder to shoulder with local operators to link in with existing support services (this doesn’t include the money we’re spending on local contractors and suppliers to keep key projects going).

“While we did this as an immediate injection back in March, we’ve been working since then on the next steps to help businesses bounce back.

"In fact at the moment there is a business survey live on Council’s Engagement website where we’re seeking additional feedback from traders so we know how we can best help them bounce back. Please do take the time to have your say and feed into the work we are doing.”

Businesses must ensure they comply with public liability insurance and access requirements, and all displays or seating areas must be safe and secure. Call our Customer Service team on 1300 22 55 77 or email enquiries@rrc.qld.gov.au with any questions.
