Rockhampton Regional Council is calling on the community to donate items for Homeless Connect, an annual event which provides people experiencing homelessness with access to various services and an opportunity stock up on essential items.

Chair of Council’s Community Service Committee Councillor Rose Swadling said that this event is always a powerful reminder of how generous and supportive our community is.

“Losing a job, a change in home circumstances, or a natural disaster could all result in any one of us losing our homes – however that does not mean losing our community,” said Cr Swadling.

“I am proud to say those in the Rockhampton Region understand this, and each year we find that people who are able to help out are more than willing to.

“We are asking anyone in the community who can afford it to donate whatever they can, including non-perishable food items; feminine products; toiletries; as well good, clean quality bedding; shoes; and clothing.

“Any donation can go a long way.

“We are also seeking local businesses who would like to donate their time and services to those who wouldn’t have access otherwise.

“This could include anyone from hairdressers, photographers, and nutritionists to optometrists, dentists, and hearing specialists.

“If you can provide a service, we’d love for you to get in touch.

“The response to this event has been fantastic in previous years, and I know it will be the same this year.”

Goods can be donated every Wednesday and Friday (excluding public holidays) between 10am and 12pm until 10 May at the caretaker’s cottage at Rockhampton Showgrounds. The caretaker’s cottage is to the right of Gate 1 on Exhibition Road.

Businesses who want to get involved can contact Council on 4936 8560 to find out more.

Homeless Connect 2019 will take place on 23 May.
