Rockhampton Regional Council has refunded more than $60,000 in lease fees to Community Groups and Sporting Clubs who have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mayor Margaret Strelow said the initiative was one of the measures outlined in a Community Recovery Package adopted by Council at the end of March.

“So for those community groups or sporting clubs that lease grounds or facilities from Council, we’ve been able to refund those fees as a way of supporting them through this time,” Mayor Strelow said.

“We know these groups have been hit hard over the past two months with retaining members and volunteers so Council wanted to provide a bit of immediate support to keep these groups going as they are a key component in the social fabric of our community.

“There are still a number of groups who are eligible for this refund  as well so I would urge any community organisation who has a council lease agreement to get in touch and see if we can help.

“This initiative is on top of the Council grants program announced this month for Community Groups and Sporting Clubs who are experiencing financial hardship with more details on that program due to be released next week,” Mayor Strelow said.
