Residents are invited to dig in and help beautify the Region’s streets at a community tree planting event in North Rockhampton this Sunday at 9am.

Chair of Council’s Park Committee, Councillor Cherie Rutherford, said that events like this are not only a great day out, but they’re a chance to really give back to the community.

“It’s my pleasure to invite everyone to come along and help plant mango seedlings and natives at Yewdale Park this weekend,” said Cr Rutherford.

“There are so many long-term benefits to planting more trees in our public spaces.

“Not only do trees make spaces more pleasant, they can reduce the surrounding temperature by up to six degrees, and improve the habitat for our local wildlife.

“Those who dig in on the day will also be helping form a connection between our Region’s past and future. The mango seedlings being planted on Sunday are grown from trees first planted in Frenchman’s Lane in the 1800s by botanist Anthelme Thozet.

“Mr Thozet was an integral figure in the early days of the Rockhampton Region. He founded the Rockhampton Agricultural Society, the Rockhampton School of Arts, and helped establish the Rockhampton Botanical Gardens.

“Residents who get involved will also be able to see the fruits of their labour for many years to come as the mango seedlings mature into stunning trees.

“And, of course, community tree plantings are always a great chance to get out, meet your neighbours, and have a lovely day with your family and friends.”

The Community Tree Planting Day will take place from 9am to 11am on Sunday 1 September at Yewdale Park. Council Parks crews will be on hand to assist on the day.
