After a successful premiere last year, Rockhampton Regional Council’s Bard Awards returns in October.

The Bard Awards is a competition for school students to perform an excerpt of a published dramatic work, in monologue, duologue and group scene categories. Entrants receive professional advice and assistance along the way.

While Shakespeare is known as ‘the Bard’, the Bard Awards uses a broader definition of the term, ‘a story teller’. Competitors can perform a traditional or contemporary published work by any author, not just Shakespeare.

The competition, to be held at the Walter Reid Cultural Centre and Pilbeam Theatre on 9-10 October, is open to school students from years 5 to 12. Participants will also be encouraged to attend workshops in the lead up to the performances.

Students will perform before an adjudicator from Queensland Theatre. Prizes will be awarded and feedback will be provided.

Family and friends are invited to attend the performances with tickets gong on sale shortly.

Rockhampton Regional Council Communities and Heritage portfolio spokesperson Cr Drew Wickerson said that positive feedback from last year has enabled organisers to extend the event this year.

“We received some great feedback last year, so this year we are extending the age categories to include upper primary students.

“Rockhampton has produced some great performers over the years and I hope that The Bard Awards will help future generations develop their interest in the performing arts,” he said.
