The call has gone out for regional Queensland artists to apply for an artist in residence opportunity, which will give unprecedented access to Rockhampton’s nationally significant art collection at Rockhampton Museum of Art.

Three residencies are being offered, with each one running for four weeks.

The opportunity has been made possible through a grant from the Regional Arts Fund, which is managed by Regional Arts Australia on behalf of the Australian Government.

The residencies will enable the selected artists to develop their own arts practice whilst studying Rockhampton’s nationally significant collection of artwork in Rockhampton Museum of Art’s purpose-built Collection Study Room.

The collection, regarded as one of the finest in regional Australia, contains the works of the ‘greats’ of Australian modernist painters

The Collection Study Room is specifically designed to give public access to works of art from the collection that are not currently on display. The room also enables access to an art database, library and assistance from specialist staff.

The Collection Study Room will be a small gallery space located on the second level of the Rockhampton Museum of Art. The room will be able to be used by education groups (from early learning centres through to postgraduate studies students), clubs and membership groups as well as visiting members of the public.

Rockhampton Regional Council Communities and heritage spokesperson Cr Drew Wickerson said that the residencies were an exciting opportunity for regional Queensland artists.

“This is what Rockhampton Museum of Art is all about — through programs such as this, regional voices will be at the forefront of the new museum. The selected artists — all from regional Queensland — will get the chance to creatively explore new ideas in this new facility away from the distractions of everyday life, in the presence of artworks created by some of Australia’s most notable modern artists,” he said.

Applications are now open. For more information and to apply visit www.rockhamptonartgallery.com.au/Get-Involved/Opportunities

Applications close: 5pm, Monday 13 December.

Rockhampton Museum of Art is due to open early in 2022.

The Regional Arts Fund is managed by Regional Arts Australia on behalf of the Australian Government.

Rockhampton Museum of Art is funded by the Australian Government through the Building Better Regions Fund; the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland and the Building our Regions program; and Rockhampton Regional Council.
