Healthy mind workshops for residents

R U OK today?

Rockhampton Regional Council and NewSTART Psychology & Counselling will bring residents tips on achieving optimum mental health to coincide with R U OK day on Thursday 10 September 2015.

Council’s Communities Committee Chair Councillor Rose Swadling said understanding mental health issues and having information on-hand was important for all community members.

“Identifying mental health issues can be difficult, so providing workshops to help our community gain a better understanding to help themselves or others will help break down the barriers to what can sometimes be a challenging topic,” Cr Swadling said.

“On R U OK Day, we’ll be hosting Principles to Achieve Optimum Mental Health with NewSTART’s expert facilitator taking participants through eight practical and proven principles to help them balance their life.

“It’s important to have a healthy mind and outlook on life and this workshop can help people achieve that, so I’m encouraging anyone who would like to better understand themselves to come along.”

Councillor Swadling said another workshop during October would focus specifically on depression.

“Our next workshop in October centres solely on depression and identifying symptoms and causes, as well as giving participants ways to challenge their thought processes,” Cr Swadling said.

“These workshops are continuing the important conversation around mental health by giving residents a much better understanding of their own health, which in turn could help others who might struggle.”
