Flying Foxes – What to do now!

Published on 14 January 2015

Rockhampton Regional Council is advising residents that between January and March in previous years, Little Red Flying Foxes have settled in our community – so now is the time to act!

Chair of Council’s Health and Compliance Committee Councillor Ellen Smith said that it was important for residents to be aware of the precautions they need to take.

“Flying foxes are native to this area, and at key times of the year roost in many trees around our Region,” said Cr Smith.

“The most important precaution you can take as a resident is to trim trees on your property. This will deter flying foxes from roosting and encourage them to move to other areas.”

Several measures also can be taken to avoid the likelihood of Flying Foxes, like all animals, contaminating your rainwater tank.

More information on protecting your rainwater can be found at www.frw.com.au under the ‘Your Home’ and ‘Water supply’ tabs.

Residents seeking to manage Flying Foxes in their area are advised to contact the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection to ensure State Government requirements are met.
