Rockhampton Regional Council is committed to making environmental sustainability a priority both within our organisation and our community. Council are taking the lead and fighting for the needs and concerns of our community through the development of submissions, policies such as the Environmental Sustainability Policy and Climate Change Policy and the introduction of the Towards 2050 plan which is the most significant strategic planning exercise and will plan for the Region for the next 40 years.
Council’s corporate and operational plans also identify a range of initiatives to improve environmental sustainability. The introduction of Council’s EcoTeam is a good example of how Council are working towards improvement within the organisation which will have a positive effect on the surrounding community.
Council are also proactively developing partnerships with key stakeholders, including:
- Landcare
- Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority
- Greening Australia
- Fitzroy Basin Association
- Fitzroy River and Coastal Catchments
- Keppel Education Centre
- Education Queensland

By participating in the Low Carbon Diet you can help your whole household, and even your community, to understand how important it is and how easy it can be to reduce CO2 emissions and live in a more environmentally sustainable way.
You can also help by volunteering your time with some of the organisations listed above, or join in events such as Clean Up Australia Day, which Council supports annually.
Environmental Protection
Council aims to reduce the negative effects of human activities on the environment. It is essential to the well being of our Region that we maintain clean rivers, fresh air, and provide suitable disposal system for waste.
Council is committed to the principles of sustainable development in the community.
As part of this commitment, Council administers the Environmental Protection Act which makes everyone including industry, State agencies, and local governments accountable for their actions, and encourages good environmental practice.
