Cyclones and Storms

To be prepared in the event of a cyclone, check your house and roof is in good condition; trim tree branches well clear of your house; clear property of loose sheet iron and other potential missiles (including outdoor furniture); prepare an emergency kit including a battery-operated radio; upon a Cyclone Warning, listen to radio (837AM ABC) and/or television for further advice.

Taking the time now to discuss and plan can help you prepare for and minimise the impact of natural disasters and could potentially save your life and the lives of your family members.

Emergency Management Queensland has a range of information resources to assist residents including the Get Ready Queensland publication which takes you step by step what you need in an emergency situation. View the pdf version by clicking here.

How prepared are you?

A few hours spent working through simple planning tasks with your household, putting aside supplies and securing your home could mean the difference between life and death.

Here are four steps to assist you in preparing your household for natural hazards and emergencies:

Step 1. Prepare an Emergency Plan and Prepare for Evacuation.
Step 2. Prepare an Emergency Kit.
Step 3. Prepare your home.
Step 4. Tune into Warnings

More information is available from the Emergency Management Queensland website www.emergency.qld.gov.au or click here to 'Be Prepared'.

You can also check your neighbours and prepare your pets

The Preparing for Cyclones booklet provides great advice on what to do before, during and after a cyclone, and the “Get Ready Kidnas! is an online package that provides children with a step-by-step approach to engage their families in preparing for a range of hazards such as cyclone, storm and flood.

These documents and specific information on accessing warnings and emergency contacts are available from the disaster website at www.disaster.qld.gov.au.
