Preparing for Floods

A few hours spent working through simple planning tasks with your household, putting aside supplies and securing your home could mean the difference between life and death.

Here are four steps to assist you in preparing your household for natural hazards and emergencies:

Step 1. Prepare an Emergency Plan and Prepare for Evacuation
Check the flood maps available from our website (see below) to view expected areas that may receive flood water inundation.

Step 2. Prepare an Emergency Kit (include a battery-operated radio)

Step 3. Prepare your home
Remove debris from areas that may have water inundation

Step 4. Tune into Warnings
Llisten to local radio (837AM ABC) and/or television, or check the Bureau of Meterology website www.bom.gov.au for further flood updates

We also recommend you check your neighbours and prepare your pets.

Further Resources

Emergency Management Queensland has a range of information to assist residents including the Be Prepared and Get Ready Queensland publication which takes you through, step by step, with what you need in an emergency situation. View the pdf version by clicking here.

Another great resource is the 'SES Get Ready Guide'. This comprehensive document provides steps to prepare for potential hazards that Queenslanders may face. It has safety tips, emergency plan and emergency contacts templates for you and your household to complete.
