The Region and is home to over 111,500 people and is the traditional home of the Darumbal Aboriginal people. The Region has 4 major localities including Rockhampton, Gracemere, Mount Morgan and Yeppoon. The Region lies on the Fitzroy River - one of the largest river systems in Queensland - and is approximately 600 kilometres north of the Queensland capital Brisbane.
Rockhampton Regional Council is the 9th largest Council in Queensland and encompasses a total land area of over 18,300 square kilometres, including national parks, state forests, coastline and islands. The main urban centre is Rockhampton, with a smaller centre at Yeppoon. There are numerous small towns and villages, both along the coast and in the rural hinterland. Rural land is used mainly for cattle raising, pineapple growing, fruit growing, forestry, and mining. Power generation and tourism are also important industries.
The Region offers a great mix of urban, rural and coastal lifestyles while also being close to major centres such as Brisbane. The Rockhampton Airport offers over 15 direct flights a day to Brisbane, Sydney and Townsville and is proving to be Central Queensland's gateway to Australia and one of the most successful regional airports in the country.
The Region is supported by a number of industries including administration, retail, hospitality, agriculture, mining, manufacturing and construction.
