Sport, Parks, Active Recreation and Community (SPARC) Strategy

Council seeks to add some ‘SPARC’ to the Rockhampton region through a new Sport, Parks, Active Recreation and Community (SPARC) Strategy.

The Strategy is designed to address the region’s open space network – the public parks, sport and recreational areas where we live and play.

The Strategy will:

  • update and replace the Regional Open Space Plan (2010) and Regional Playground Strategy (2010);
  • define the vision, principles and goals required to guide the provision of open space for sport, recreation and parks across the region;
  • provide a framework for actively planning and delivering appropriate open space for the community;
  • deliver a blueprint/network plan for delivery and management of new and existing services; and
  • ·outline a practical action plan to guide implementation of the Strategy.

Council has engaged experienced sport, parks and recreation planners Otium Planning Group to help prepare the Strategy.

Want to help ignite the SPARC?

The development of the Strategy relies on the involvement of the community, so Council welcomes input from schools, sport and recreation groups, the local community and other interested parties throughout the study.

Already community consultation in late 2016 and early 2017 has included:

  • awareness raising via the Community Conversation program
  • community meetings in Rockhampton, Gracemere and Mount Morgan
  • focus groups for sporting organisations
  • updates via Council’s website, social media, mailing lists and radio interviews
  • targeted surveys (for residents, sport and recreation clubs and schools) and
  • further updates at the 2017 Sports and Health Expo.

The Consultation Summary(PDF, 5MB) highlights findings from this consultation and the surveys. It is a way of reporting back to the community and confirming the findings. We welcome further support and suggestions.

What’s next?

The SPARC Strategy is currently being drafted for Council consideration. Upon endorsement, the draft Strategy will be provided back to the community for feedback. This is now expected to take place in July 2017.
