Gracemere Community Garden – Come one and all

A community garden has great benefits for individuals and neighbourhoods, and has the power to bring communities closer together. Now, residents of Gracemere have the opportunity to contribute and partake in their own community garden and residents are invited to come celebrate at the opening.

The Gracemere Community Garden, on Barry Street will be officially opened on Saturday, 11 February 2012.

Division Four Representative, Councillor Sandra O’Brien is ecstatic that this great facility is up and running, and that there has already been solid interest in utilising the site.

“Around nine groups are looking to use the garden already and with the support we have received already, I am sure that the garden will become a long term asset for the community providing a meeting point for residents of all ages. ” Cr O’Brien said.

“We have also received great support from many local businesses, and I thank them for their contribution.”

Contributions have been provided by Gracemere Shopping World, Avondale Nurseries, Kevin Briggs, Harcourts Real Estate, Gracemere Bakery, Dick McNevin and Bunnings.

Once the garden is in full swing, residents will have access to fresh, home grown fruit and vegetables and the garden will be a great education tool for children and adults alike.

Chair of the Community Development and Customer Service Committee, Councillor Rose Swadling sees the Gracemere Community Garden as a fantastic resource.

“The Gracemere Community Garden is a fantastic resource for the community and I encourage residents to volunteer their time and reap the rewards of their labour,” Cr Swadling said.

Mayor Brad Carter and Cr Cherie Rutherford will also be in attendance at the opening.
