Rockhampton Regional Council has answered the call for help and is providing much needed assistance to the recent earthquake affected Philippines.
More than 5,000 syringes, 12,000 needles, thermometer probe covers, stethoscope ear piece replacements, tape, 14 oxygen masks and other general medical supplies will be provided to the Marina Mission Clinic located in Dauin, Negros Oriental, an outreach program from the Community of Silliman University Medical Centre operated by volunteers from the medical and allied health professions.
Negros Oriental was recently ravaged by a 6.5 earthquake. More than 300 residents lost their lives and thousands more have lost their homes and are living in evacuation centres. Local organisation; Volunteers Without Borders, is comprised of members representing various professional and non-profit organisations, and it was this organisation who identified the need for medical equipment to assist those in need.
Chair of the Community Development and Customer Service Committee, Councillor Rose Swadling reflects on helping those who are in need of assistance.
“During the 2010/2011 floods the local, national and international community helped the Rockhampton Region out during our time in need. The support they provided was instrumental in helping our community get back on its feet quickly,” Cr Swadling said.
“This is our chance as a community and as a Council to give back and provide assistance where it is needed, and with the recent disaster in the Philippines happening, the medical equipment we are providing could be the difference between life and death.”
Equipment and supplies being donated are consumables left over from the local school based immunisation program. Useable gear was identified and items have been provided to the Philippines, and other equipment and supplies have been provided to a local community group that can utilise the items for residents in need.
