Council is actively working with the State Government on the rehabilitation of the old hospital site to allow the handover of the land to Council for the future foreshore redevelopment.
Community supports revitalisation of Yeppoon beachfront with valuable feedback
Thanks to the valuable feedback given by community members and stakeholders during the recent public consultation, Rockhampton Regional Council is another step closer to planning how the Yeppoon foreshore site can be best enjoyed as an exciting community asset.
Mayor of Rockhampton Regional Council, Cr Brad Carter said feedback and comments during the consultation period were overwhelmingly supportive of the Yeppoon Foreshore Redevelopment, which will transform the former Yeppoon Hospital grounds into a vibrant and active recreation area for the Region to enjoy.
“We were really pleased with the consultation and will remain steadfast in progressing these concept plans for the site to achieve an appropriate balance between the community’s aspirations for the precinct and funding considerations,” Cr Carter said.
Cr Carter said that all comments received during the consultation period were positive, and that while many referenced other water parks such as The Strand, Gold Coast Broadwater and Hervey Bay, there was a strong sentiment that while redevelopment will be good for the Region’s tourism it still must also cater for locals.
“Barbecue facilities and shade were also frequently mentioned and 75% of people who responded to the survey supported the conversion of Anzac Parade into a shared use area along the waterfront for pedestrians and cyclists,” Cr Carter said.
“Stakeholder comments reinforced that the foreshore should represent Yeppoon and not somewhere else; that it should conserve, enhance and appreciate the natural environment with multi-use open spaces, interactive parks with low impact infrastructure and pedestrian links connecting the foreshore to the shore.
“I’m delighted with the outcomes so far, for our community, with the Queensland Government funding the demolition of the former hospital buildings, which has allowed Council to focus on progressing this regionally significant revitalisation project.
"It is imperative that we take into consideration the broader coastal foreshore and compliment existing residential and commercial developments, and I think the latest detailed concept drawings do this,” he said.
The original concept plan shows a strong connection to the beachfront and includes a fun water feature, community open space, a retail café precinct, modified road access, a shared pedestrian and cyclist zone and amended use of the former Yeppoon Council Chambers.
After taking into consideration the comments received during the consultation with the community and key stakeholders, revised concept drawings have been completed. The next step will be to complete preliminary drawings and cost estimates for the project to allow Council to explore a number of funding options.
