Pest (Feral) Animals

Pest (feral) animals differ from domestic animals in that they have not simply escaped the confines of their owner's property, but are living as wild animals.

The following animals, which have been declared Class 2 Pests by the Queensland Government, may be problematic in the Rockhampton Regional area:

  • Feral Cats
  • Feral Dogs
  • Dingos
  • Foxes
  • Feral Pigs
  • Rabbits
  • Deer

Council’s Pest Management officers are responsible for trapping pest animals causing a nuisance or hazard on public land.

They can also assist landowners to control pest animals which present a nuisance on private land by:

  • Lending out animal traps.  These are not the same traps loaned out at Council Pound Facilities, which are for domestic animals. Council will dispose of trapped pest animals.
  • Implementing baiting programs for cases of wild dogs and dingoes.

If a domestic animal is trapped, you must contact Council’s Animal Management and request the animal be collected and impounded.  If a native animal or bird is accidentally trapped, by law you must release it immediately.
