Work experience is a formal arrangement entered into between the Principal of a student’s educational institution and/or Vocational Placement Officer and Rockhampton Regional Council, whereby Council agrees to provide the student with on-the-job experience in performing work as part of the student’s acquirement of skills in the course of their education program.
Council is committed to helping students participate in work experience programs to enable them to make informed decisions about their future.
Eligibility
To be eligible you must be a secondary school or tertiary student who is at least 14 years of age.
Work experience is conducted under the auspice of an educational institution where an approved scheme is in place. Students must be registered with a recognised educational institution that covers them for personal insurance and public liability.
Tertiary students required to complete unpaid mandatory and/or assessable hours are not considered Work Experience and therefore are not eligible for this program. Please call Customer Service on 1300 22 55 77 to be directed to the relevant Department.
Applicants who are outside of the educational system are not eligible for this program.
How to Apply
Applications will only be accepted in writing from the educational institution of the student.
You will need to:
- Apply no later than 4 weeks prior to requested placement
- Complete an application form

Approval will not be given for work experience to occur in any of the following areas:
- Areas that pose high risk of personal injury or illness;
- Areas where there is a special licensing requirement to perform the work, a special accreditation is required to gain entry to the work site (e.g. Construction Blue/White Card), or specific PPE is required to be worn on the work site (e.g. steel cap boots), unless the student already has their own licence, accreditation and/or PPE;
- Areas responsible for the housing and care of animals.
