Rockhampton Regional Council is continuing to monitor a tropical low in the Coral Sea which the Bureau of Meteorology is predicting has a high chance of turning into a tropical cyclone over the weekend.

It comes as council crews have been checking stormwater and flood mitigation works around the region today after more than 170mm of rain fell across Rockhampton this week, with reports of some areas receiving up to 300mm.

Councillor Tony Williams, who is Chair of the Infrastructure Committee and Local Disaster Management Group, said a number of flood mitigation projects completed over the past 12 months had ensured the storm water network across the city performed well.

“We’ve had great feedback from residents about how some recent upgrades performed this past week, in particular Stage 2 of the McLeod Park Drainage Scheme had a significant improvement with the busy Dean St intersection remaining open.

“These works are part of our wider Rockhampton Regional Council Flood Management Strategy which includes mitigation plans to address Riverine, Local Creek Catchment and Overland flow flooding.

“I would like to thank all our crews that have been inspecting and clearing drains and inlets across the city over the last week to ensure that our stormwater infrastructure was performing well during those heavy falls.

“The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting more rain next week and Council is closely monitoring the tropical low in the Coral Sea to see whether it develops into a cyclone over the weekend.

“While the system is forecast to cross the coast further north, our crews have been removing debris and checking the stormwater system to ensure we are ready.

“For residents, today is the day to get ready and make sure they prepare their properties, stock up the emergency kit, get their cyclone plan ready and stay up to date with the latest information, especially if you’re planning to travel North at the weekend,” Cr Williams said.
