The Rockhampton and Livingstone State Emergency Service (SES) Units are putting the call out for our community to take the time and visit your local SES this ‘2016 SES Week’ and pick up your Storm, Cyclone and Flood preparation information or just say ‘Thanks!’.

Rockhampton and Livingstone SES Unit Local Controller Eddie Cowie said SES volunteers had shown great dedication to their communities during recent severe weather events, and even more commitment in training and engaging our local SES in preparation for future events.

“Last year we were at the centre of Cyclone Marcia with almost 7000 requests for assistance in the Rockhampton and Livingstone Council areas, placing a real challenge on our SES Volunteers, but we held our own and with assistance from other SES Volunteers from around Queensland we got the jobs done” Mr Cowie stated.

“SES Week is a great opportunity for people who want to receive information on how they can prepare themselves and their homes with many different planning and preparedness brochures available or to simply give back to their community by learning how to get involved in joining the SES in Queensland,” Mr Cowie said.

“We currently have just over 250 active SES volunteers across ten SES groups in the Rockhampton and Livingstone area who volunteer their time to ensure our community remains safe when emergencies and disaster strikes. We’re looking to recruit another 50 volunteers ahead of storm and cyclone season across all of our 10 SES Groups, particularly focusing in the Keppel Sands, Yaamba, and Mt Morgan areas, to help lighten their load.” Mr Cowie said the SES was a popular volunteering option because it offered practical skills training, adventure, friendship and a strong community focus of giving back to the community.

There will be a number of separate SES Week Community Engagement activities occurring across both Rockhampton and Livingstone SES Units and facilitated by different SES Groups including Mt Morgan at the White Elephant all week, Gracemere SES at St Pauls Country Fair this Saturday, Rockhampton SES HQ Open Day 90 Charles Street this Saturday morning from 9am till 12pm, Yeppoon SES at Keppel Bay Plaza this week and Marlborough SES at the Marlborough Convenience Store.
