Rockhampton Regional Council has lodged a senate submission strongly in support of the proposed policy to decentralise Commonwealth departments into Regional areas.

The submission, which also received the support of CQUniversity, Capricornia Chamber of Commerce and Beef Australia, outlines that the relocation of government offices to Rockhampton would be an effective catalyst for regional growth.

Rockhampton Region Mayor Margaret Strelow said decentralisation would strengthen communication between regional and urban areas whilst improving policies that reflect and support regional communities.

“We would certainly welcome the relocation of Commonwealth agencies to our Region; it would open up new opportunities for collaboration between all levels of government,” Mayor Strelow said.

“It would have a very positive impact on policy development from a grass roots level because the agencies would witness first-hand the challenges and opportunities our Region’s industries face.

“Traditionally we have had a strong presence of Commonwealth agencies that benefit from our strategic location and industries, and I believe we are a natural fit for government departments and in particular agriculture agencies.”

Council’s submission listed Meat and Livestock Australia, Australian Meat Processor Corporation, and the re-establishment of a CSIRO agriculture division as agencies that are well suited to the Region.

“As a hub for industry research, agencies like these would have immediate access to our industry leaders and experts, the University and other state and local government authorities,” Cr Strelow said.

Council also nominated the relocation of federal departments including, The Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet (Indigenous Affairs Group), Department of Human Service, CSIRO (Mining and Manufacturing, Renewables and Energy), Department of Employment, Office of Northern Australia and Department of Defence.

Mayor Strelow added that families relocating to the Rockhampton Region would feel secure in knowing there are great opportunities for a very convenient lifestyle, in addition to top education and health facilities, and affordable housing.

Council’s submission also requested the Senate Reference Committee to conduct a hearing in Rockhampton.

The committee is due to report to the Government in May.
