Council brings forward plans to build new Gracemere pound

Published on 24 May 2016

The new Gracemere pound facility has been accelerated after Council today resolved to award a tender for construction of the administration, cattery and veterinarian facility along with the first module of new kennels.

Original announcements had only included the construction of one module of kennels.

Rockhampton Region Mayor Margaret Strelow said budget allocations for the 2016/17 and 2017/18 financial years have now been brought forward to allow Council to release and award a larger scope of contracts sooner.

“Not only does this improve our pound facilities sooner but it is part of Council's deliberate strategy of pushing work 'out to market' as quickly as possible to help our local economy,” Mayor Strelow said.

“This will be a significant contract that will provide much needed job opportunities in the Gracemere area during construction.”

The new facility will be located along the Capricorn Highway in Gracemere on a historical pound site from the former Fitzroy Shire.

Council’s Committee Chair of Planning and Regulation Councillor Ellen Smith said the $1.6 million project is designed in modules that allow for further expansion to cater for future needs.

“We will deliver a facility that will meet the contemporary animal welfare standards and improve our operating efficiency, and greatly improve conditions for our staff.”

“It will be completed in two stages with the first stage to include an administration block, cat holding and isolation, veterinary services facility and 24 screened kennels.”

“Stage two will include a sealed road network with onsite car parking, another 24 kennel extension and stock control facilities.”
