Quay Street Render

Rockhampton Regional Council has voted to commence construction of the new Quay Street redevelopment and to proceed to detailed design for the parkland development on the lower bank of the river.

The decision was passed at a Special Council meeting this afternoon.

Rockhampton Region Mayor Margaret Strelow said the Council vote was almost unanimous and reflected the overwhelmingly positive response to Council's consultation.

“83% of those surveyed online and via written and face-to-face surveys at shopping centres were strongly positive towards the development,” Mayor Strelow said.

Mayor Strelow said concerns about parking had been addressed with additional parking being incorporated in the area between William and Derby Streets.

“Instead of earlier designs that showed a net loss in car parking there will now be an increase of six carparks overall,” she said.

“Concerns about the safety of the water play area were being referred to safety specialists and the request from the community for a children's play area to be incorporated have been met.”

Mayor Strelow thanked the community for the great feedback over the past six weeks.

“There is no doubt that we have a better design now than we started with and I appreciate the time that people took to think about the proposal and to put forward constructive suggestions,” she said.

Council will liaise with Quay Street businesses prior to works commencing in mid-October.
