The Green Army is set to take up arms and battle the clean-up on Mount Archer following Rockhampton Regional Council’s successful application under the Green Army Natural Disaster Recovery round.

Working in partnership with Landcare Australia, Manpower and Council officers, the Green Army will undertake restoration activities including cross-cutting fallen trees to re-establish access on tracks through the park and connecting with bushland, rehabilitation works, debris removal, weed treatment, revegetation and erosion control to build resilience to future storm events.

Rockhampton Region Mayor Margaret Strelow and Councillors thanked Federal Member for Capricornia, Michelle Landry, for throwing support behind the project.

“The Green Army Programme is a great initiative to help restore our precious environment on Mount Archer while providing experience for our youth and the unemployed at the same time,” Mayor Strelow said.

“This is the outcome we had hoped for and I thank Michelle for helping us make it a reality.”

Division 10 Councillor Neil Fisher said the programme will see part of his vision for the Mountain come to life.

“Activation of Mount Archer has been one of my goals as Councillor and this is just another step towards a victory on this front,” Councillor Fisher said.

“From this programme we will see improvement in public access on Fraser Park and also a conservation plan that supports the opportunities listed in our Mount Archer Master Plan.”

The Green Army targets people from ages 17 to 24 who are interested in gaining practical experience working in the environment while being paid.
